Second Lecture of “University Life” of Academic Year 2024/2025 successfully held by Department of General Education at MUST

On September 22nd, 2024, the second "University Life" general education lecture organized by the Department of General Education at MUST was successfully held at R109 Grand Auditorium. In the first part of the lecture, Assistant Professors from Faculty of Law namely WANG Jia, CHEN Qin, LIAO Si, and ZHU Feng shared their insights on the topics of law and morality with the new students. In the second part, special invited guests from Macao Judiciary Police Division namely CHEONG Kim Fong, Duty Supervisor of the Judiciary Police Youth Concern Group, TANG Wai Wa, Senior Criminal Investigator of the Judiciary Police Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre, LEI Meng Kai, Criminal Investigator of the Judiciary Police Youth Concern Group, KONG Ka Wai, Principal Criminal Investigator of the Judiciary Police Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre and CHAN Un Tai, Principal Criminal Investigator of the Judiciary Police Youth Concern Group who enlightened the new students on important information and knowledge about Macao's laws and regulations, as well as anti-crime and anti-scam measures.

At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. WONG Ka Weng, Head of Student Affairs Office, presented souvenir to CHEONG Kim Fong, Duty Supervisor of the Judiciary Police Youth Concern Group, expressing gratitude for their invaluable assistance to MUST students in their busy schedules, to help freshmen identify scams and online traps and enhance their crime prevention awareness.

Afterwards, Assistant Professors from the Faculty of Law, WANG Jia, CHEN Qin, LIAO Si, and ZHU Feng, discussed the relationship between law and other norms and values from multiple dimensions, such as the characteristics of law, the basic relationship between law and ethics, the importance of understanding and applying law, and the relationship between law and technology. They used specific social hot cases and examples related to urban clean-up in Macao to help the new students gain a deeper understanding of law and ethics.

Additionally, this session of the "University Life" course also featured a special lecture by the Commissioner of the Macao Judiciary Police Division, which included two main topics: (1) preventing crime, and (2) preventing telecommunications scams targeted at college students. During the Prevention of Crime Lecture, detailed explanations were provided on the types and characteristics of cybercrime, as well as the criminal provisions for various offences such as infringement, theft, lost & found reporting, robbery, and sexual assault, allowing the new students to have a deeper understanding of Macao's laws and regulations. In the Telecommunications Scams Prevention Lecture, an overview of eight common methods of telecommunications scams were given, followed by an analysis of the severe consequences that telecommunications scams can bring to college students and their families, as well as real case videos and footage to raise awareness among the students.

This "University Life" course is a compulsory course set up for new undergraduate students by MUST, aiming to help freshmen transition into university life smoothly and quickly as well as to plan for their future career paths through a series of comprehensive, interdisciplinary lectures and practical experiences.
